César Chávez was a Mexican-American labor leader and civil rights, activist. He dedicated his life's work to what he called la causa (the cause): the struggle of farmworkers in the United States. La causa looked to improve farmers working and living conditions through organizing and negotiating contracts with their employers. Committed to the tactics of nonviolent resistance practiced by Mahatma Gandhi & Martin Luther King Jr., Chávez founded the National Farm Workers Association (later the United Farm Workers of America) and won important victories to raise pay and improve working conditions for farmworkers in the late 1960s and 1970s.

At CARECEN we honor César Chavez's life and work by focusing on improving the quality of life for an empowered Latino community. For 40 years we have remained true to our history of working to foster comprehensive development of the Latino population in the Washington, DC area.

To celebrate his birth-date on March 31, 1927, join us from home for a night of cooking. We are partnering up with Immigrant Food & Chef Mile Montezuma for a fun class on how to cook arepas. Buy your tickets and leave the rest to us! Your kit will include all the ingredients needed to make two large arepas, one vegetarian and one chicken. All you need to provide is water!

Are you looking to add a bit more to the experience? You can add a bottle of wine to your kit purchase (see ticket options). The wine will be a great Argentinian La Celia Malbec, which will pair perfectly with the classic Venezuelan dish: Arepas.

Proceeds from the event will support CARECEN in transforming immigrants' lives, through facilitating the process of transition for immigrants to an integrated life in their new home and equipping them to play an essential role in their community.

We hope you can join us!

Our partner: Immigrant Food is D.C.'s first cause-casual restaurant. This is a restaurant that celebrates the successes of past immigrants and positively impacts today's immigrants who have come to America to remake their lives. Immigrant Food’s business plan was built by ‘layering’ multiple points of connectivity between the community and the cause. That meant reaching out to the NGOs, like CARECEN, doing the hard work and asking us how to have a real impact on their work.
