9/15/2022 Update: Close to 7000 immigrants have arrived in DC from Texas and Arizona. Of those arriving, 70% are travelling in a family unit, with over 30% being minor children. CARECEN continues to work with our partners - SAMU Catholic Charities, and mutual aid groups - to purchase transportation and temporary housing, collect donated supplies, and provide culturally appropriate reception and orientation services. We are also starting a new Navigator program and coordinating with service providers city-wide to help those staying in the area connect to existing resources. Your support makes this work possible!

5/2/2022 Update: Bus number 19 arrived in the middle of the night. So far, CARECEN has assisted hundreds of immigrants from Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo and Ghana to reach their final destinations and witnessed the reunifications of several families. CARECEN is also working with our community partners to find transitional housing for those that are looking to make the DMV their home. We are in desperate need of continued financial support if we are to continue this work!



4/20/2022 Update: The 7th bus from Texas arrived this morning. CARECEN staff and volunteers from Sanctuary DMV and Lutheran Services were present to welcome migrants and accompany them to a safe, private location to assess need and provide services. We were able to provide food, clothing (jackets and shoes), bus tickets, SIM cards, and lots of coffee!

We are still in search of more community partners - especially those who may be able to provide temporary shelter.

We are working to welcome immigrants arriving after a 30-hour journey from Texas, and ensure they have information and basic resources to get to their final destinations, and for many to reunite with loved ones. Migrants are being dropped off near Union Station on a daily basis without any sense of where they are or how to get to their families. CARECEN has shown up everyday and assisted migrants with resources. Our staff and volunteers pack and distribute snacks and sandwiches so they can have a meal upon arriving and another as they continue their journey. All migrants also received toiletries, masks, and hand sanitizer. In addition, CARECEN staff provide Know Your Rights training to orient them to immigration policies in the US and necessary next steps as they pursue legal representation. Finally, for those who are in need of financial resources to get to their final destination, CARECEN has purchased bus tickets.

We are not sure how long Governor Abbot will continue to use these immigrants for his own political agenda, but CARECEN will continue to promote our mission of creating a city where all communities thrive in solidarity and dignity, enjoy a prosperous life, and work towards achieving social justice and political empowerment, and we will be there to assist for as long is needed.
